For example, in buildings with low ceiling heights, low-throw airflow models are often the option of choice to eliminate drafts. However, if the building has high ceilings and requires heating, high-throw flow models are used to ensure that the air reaches the occupied zone and to help avoid stratification. The occupied zone is 1.8 m [6 feet] above the floor. This is the area where employees may be working, customers may be shopping or eating, or guests exercising. Typically, velocities in the occupied zone are specified between 0.25 m/s [50 fpm] and 0.7 m/s [150 fpm]. The lower limit is more likely to be found for sedentary activities, such as office work, and the higher limit for high energy acitivities such as exercise. It is important to understand the kinds of activities in the occupied zone to be able to specify the appropriate throws, thus ensuring occupant comfort.
